FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS AN EGRESS WINDOW?

An Egress Window System is a window large enough for a firefighter to climb inside of a residence and any person able to exit the residence in case of an emergency. U.S. building codes require each bedroom of a home to have an emergency exit window, with minimum sizes specified.

You can trust the Pros.

Long Island Egress Pros has provided families with comfortable, safe below-ground living space for over ten years. Installing an egress opening is not a job for your handyman; it is for the professionals found at Long Island Egress Pros.

WHAT IS AN EGRESS WELL?

An Egress Window System Well is a protective lining placed around the edges of an egress window. In turn, this prevents erosion and other signs of general wear to newly installed systems.

Egress Window Wells are typically dug from the ground level to the basement to bring more exposure to the window, allowing for an effective escape route from the basement in case of emergencies. Window wells come in various styles and can be composed of the following material or others: aluminum, plastic lining, wood, brick, and stone.

Long Island Egress Pros can install window wells suited for any home, able to match a basement’s style while providing world-class installation techniques to ensure newly installed Egress Window Systems are structurally sound.

From Vinyl Bright Light Wells to custom-designed Mason Wells, Long Island Egress Pros are trusted by many in bringing your basement an Egress Well that can provide comfort, style, and an effective route to safety in case of emergency.

WHAT ARE WELL COVERS & GRATES?

Egress Window Systems have outdoor and indoor components. Covers and grates take up the job of protecting your basement Egress Window Systems from external damage while remaining as a stylish feature of any complete Egress Window System. Covers can prevent people and animals from falling into open wells. These covers will also protect your well from a build-up of leaves and other natural debris, as well as protect your egress window from the weather.

Egress Window Systems can accommodate various styles of well coverings. Many kinds of covers are made from durable materials in different textures and colors. Proper well covers such as those offered by Long Island Egress Pros can withstand both heavyweights as well as brutal weather.

WHAT ARE EGRESS WALKOUTS?

Long Island Egress Pros also specializes in Egress Walkouts as well. Turning your basement into a walkout basement can be a crucial step in achieving fire and emergency safety within your home, especially when paired with an Egress Window System.

Egress walkouts take the form of a staircase leading from the lower level of the basement to an upper, outdoor level beside one’s home. Egress walkout systems have the benefits of providing yet another means of emergency evacuation to round your basement’s emergency escape plan.

Long Island Egress Pros offers walkouts of many styles that can fit any home. Only trained professionals should be installing these systems, Long Island Egress Pros are those professionals!

WHAT ARE THE BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN EGRESS OPENING?

Long Island Egress Pros Strictly Adhere to the Building Code Requirements:

Window wells are allowed to be covered with covers or screens, provided that the net clear opening height and width of the cover or screen, when open, meets that of the egress window itself. Such covers or screens shall be releasable or removable from the inside without using a key, tool, special knowledge, or force greater than that required for the egress window’s regular operation.

Egress windows may be placed under decks or other projections provided the window can be fully opened and provides a path not less than 36 inches in height to a yard or court.
